An electric skateboard and an electric scooter both move you through the city without pedalling, but they are different vehicles. A scooter has handlebars and a platform. An electric skateboard is a deck with four wheels that you steer by leaning, controlled with a handheld remote.

The short answer
- A scooter is the simplest and most upright ride: step on, hold the handlebars and go.
- An electric skateboard feels like skating. It is more exciting to ride, much lighter to carry and takes up less space.
- Rules depend on your country and city. Check them before riding in public.
How they ride
On a scooter you hold handlebars and steer with your hands. On an electric skateboard you stand sideways and steer by shifting your weight, so turning feels like carving on a skateboard or snowboard. Speed and braking are controlled from the remote.
Fun factor
This is where the two differ most. A scooter is a practical way to get from A to B, and the ride is calm and predictable. An electric skateboard is more thrilling: you lean into every turn, feel the acceleration through your legs and carve along the street the way you would on a snowboard. If riding itself is part of the point, a board is usually the more exciting choice.
Learning curve
A scooter is usually easier in the first minutes. An electric skateboard takes a little longer to master, but most riders feel comfortable after a few short sessions in an empty area using the lowest speed mode. See our beginner safety guide.
Weight: what you carry when you are not riding
Weight is the biggest practical difference. Electric skateboards range from about 6 kg for the lightest boards to a little over 20 kg for large long-range models. Many scooters weigh 15 to 25 kg or more, and they stay bulky even when folded.
In daily life that matters. You can pick up a light electric skateboard under one arm and walk up several flights of stairs, onto a train or into the office. Carrying a scooter up stairs is much harder, and most people cannot do it for long. If you live in an apartment without a lift, or you combine riding with public transport, a board is far easier to live with.
Storage
A mini electric skateboard such as the Verreal Mini weighs 7 kg and fits under a desk or behind a door. Many scooters fold, but they remain bulky and heavy once folded. Compare boards in our mini electric skateboard guide.
Terrain
Scooters with small wheels struggle on cracks and gravel. A board with large pneumatic or all-terrain wheels can handle rougher surfaces. See the wheels guide.
Rules
Rules for electric skateboards and electric scooters differ by country and city, and they change. Check your local rules before riding in public. Read more in our guide to electric skateboard rules in Europe.
Which one is right for you?
- Choose a scooter if you want the simplest, most upright ride and you do not need to carry it.
- Choose an electric skateboard if you want a more exciting ride, a deck light enough to carry upstairs and the feel of skating.
