Off-Road Electric Skateboard Guide: Wheels, Fit and Which Board to Pick

Off-Road Electric Skateboard Guide: Wheels, Fit and Which Board to Pick

An off-road electric skateboard is, in practice, a belt-drive board with large off-road wheels. Verreal's RS-series boards take 150 mm pneumatic wheels, 160 mm airless wheels and 165 mm Cloudwheel Rover wheels (175 mm pneumatic wheels are also available), so the same board can ride on pavement or on gravel, grass and dirt tracks.

This guide compares the off-road wheel options, explains what you need for them to fit, and shows which board to start from.

What makes an electric skateboard off-road?

  • Large wheels. Off-road setups use wheels of 150 mm and up, which roll over cracks, gravel and roots that stop small street wheels.
  • Belt drive. Belt-drive boards let you change wheels and pulleys. The RS series uses two belt motors and its own trucks.
  • Protected belts. Larger wheels need belt covers to keep dirt and grit out of the belt.

The 120 mm Cloudwheels are semi off-road only: they handle rough pavement and light paths, not loose ground.

Off-road wheel options compared

Wheel Type Price Good to know
150 mm pneumatic Air-filled tyre Full kit $209; kit + spare wheel $249; single wheel $50 Kit includes 4 tyres, 2 pulleys, 2 belt covers, 2 belts
175 mm pneumatic Air-filled tyre From $50 (single wheel) to $249 (kit + spare) Largest diameter; 66-tooth pulleys
160 mm airless Solid, no air Full combo $139; single wheel $39 Cannot go flat; includes 4 wheels, 2 pulleys, 2 belts, bearings, spacers
165 mm Cloudwheel Rover Rubber and polyurethane, 60A $249 50 mm wide

Pneumatic or airless?

  • Pneumatic (air-filled) tyres cushion the ride on rough ground. They can puncture, so keep a spare inner tube (about $14 to $20) or the kit with a spare wheel.
  • Airless wheels cannot go flat and need no pressure checks, which suits riders who want low maintenance.
  • Cloudwheel Rovers are a rubber and polyurethane wheel for riders who want large, soft wheels without air.

What you need for the wheels to fit

  • An RS-series board. The off-road kits work with Verreal's own RS trucks. The very first generation of thin trucks is not compatible.
  • The right belt length. Kits ship with 340 mm belts for 150 mm and 160 mm wheels (360 mm for 175 mm). Tell us your belt length if your board needs a different one.
  • Belt covers. A belt cover for 150 mm, 160 mm and 175 mm wheels is $45 a pair.

Which board to start from

Nominal ranges are measured on pavement. Soft ground, hills and larger wheels use more energy, so expect less off-road.

Riding off-road safely

  • Wear a helmet and protective gear, and ride slower on loose surfaces.
  • Verreal boards are water resistant, not waterproof. Avoid mud, puddles and wet ground; see our waterproofing guide.
  • Check the rules where you ride: access to trails and parks varies.

FAQ: off-road electric skateboards

Can any electric skateboard go off-road?

No. Off-road riding needs large wheels and a belt-drive setup that accepts them. Verreal's RS series is built for these wheel kits.

Which off-road wheels are best?

It depends on the ground and how much maintenance you accept. Pneumatic tyres cushion rough ground but can puncture, airless wheels never go flat, and Cloudwheel Rovers are a soft rubber and polyurethane option.

Can I switch back to street wheels?

Yes. On a belt-drive RS board you can change wheels, pulleys and belts to match where you ride.

Does an off-road setup reduce range?

Rough ground, hills and larger wheels use more energy than riding on pavement, so expect less than the nominal range.
